America- " A little to helpful?"

Tuesday afternoon, January 12th, the worst earthquake in 200 years - 7.0 in magnitude - struck less than ten miles from the Caribbean city of Port-au-Prince, Haiti. The initial quake was later followed by twelve aftershocks greater than magnitude 5.0. Structures of all kinds were damaged or collapsed, from poor town homes to landmarks. This event shocked the whole world including me as I followed up with the progress of the road to recovery. I was amazed at how the world seemed to pull together and worked as one to help one of the poorest countries in the world.

Now, this is where It I will get you to think beyond what you are seeing.

Now this may sound controversial, but I feel that America has invested to much into Haiti. I agree with them in helping out a third world country and I know all of us were saddened by this event. But have you ever stop think what America probably expect in return for being such a great help? I think so. America do not like countries that are not about democracy. If you are not democratic, or trying to be so, historically the chances are that the American government is going to try to take you out. America is just trying to make a name in the world as being " The Helpful Country". But when it was our turn to be helped out, who came to our need? No one.

Secondly, where was all this help and togetherness when New Orleans was struck by Hurricane Katrina? When one of it's own was under water and calling for help, the response took forever. How is it that America is so quick to help someone that is not of their kin or beliefs but took so long to help one of their states? Also, it is known that we are in a recession and that America has no money. So my question is where did all the money that went into Haiti come from?

This is just something to get you thinking beyond what is shown to you on television. Nothing is giving for free without a price. Feel free to agree or disagree with my standpoint I have taken. It is that “ Do you think there is a catch to America’s Over Generosity?” Or Not. Time to get Political.

  1. My heart and my mind goes out to Haiti. I was looking on the news and I always wondered how Haiti got to poor. I don't understand how Haiti could have been so poor for so many years. I looked at the leadership from the 1950's and on. From the news, the leader in those times they took money from the people's funds and used them for self gain and built themselves up. For years and years this was done to the people. Why are they so poor? Why are people living off of $4.00 a week. That is crazy. I hope and pray that Haiti will become stronger than ever. R.i.p to all those that were lost. I am very happy America is helping and the world

  3. I do not feel Haiti is receiving too much help; however, i feel Haiti is receiving too little help. You can not compare the Hurricane Katrina disaster in New Orleans to the earthquake disaster that devastated Haiti. There are many corporations and organizations that are working together to help those whom are currently in need in the United States; you just have not been informed of any.

  4. Hm ok. Why can't i compare the hurricane in New Orleans to Earthquake. They are both disasters that occurred and inflicted on people lives and killed many. Period. Everyone just thought America could have handled themselves because we are a fairly wealthy country. As oppose to Haiti who is a third world country. That's all. Lastly, i said they are helping Haiti too much in that they might be expecting something in return or something. Just my thought

  9. I guess if I ask what S.H said in class i know what answer i'd get so...I just wont ask. This is a very interesting topic though. However America is only acting according to its leadership. It's always good to help those in need by the way, so i don't see any problem in lending a hand in situations like these. Going to war is another story and that's where the leadership to govern the country comes in to play.

  10. Very interesting topic!....

First off Haiti's state of "Poverty" is not just due to internal corruption in its leaders or government officials it is much more deeper than that... you see back in the day Haiti was a very prosperous country and if my facts are correct... France's cash cow on the global market of sugar(Slavery time).

Haiti through much struggles achieved independence long long before many other Caribbean countries....it might have been the first and at that time it was like a slap in the face for the powers that be...."A Black Nation"??.. France lashed out at them imposing ridiculous fines etc and the other global powers also made it hard for them to flourish as an independent country.

Now I agree that America through the years seems to always have hidden agenda when they "help" case in point "weapons of mass destruction" translation - "I want your oil"

However i don't agree with comparing the help in haiti to New Orleans.... for one its a different administration and two we really don't know all the facts about that situation except that it took longer than most people think it should have.

And i don't think there is such a thing as too much help especially in Haiti's case who have been suffering for centuries while everyone more or less turned a blind eye because there was nothing there for them to "gain" from this "dark nation" and no one put a spot light on them or heard their cries.

  11. I cant agree with you because America is one of the five riches nations so there fore they have an obligation to assist as much as they can. You never know when the tables might turn so do unto others as you would like them to do on to you.
